An explanation of organizational policy in your field education experience

Naomi’s Nest a division of Elmhurst Home organization services women and men, all of the policies and procedures are across the board. As an organization, we have to follow as was the agency policies that pay for our clients stay and treatment (Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network).

Here are some of the in-house policies and procedures, rules and regulations for the house for SUD/Mental Health, informed consent to treatment, medication policy, just to name a few. Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network has policies and procedures for the client we serve from the payer side, as a provider will provide case management/relapse prevention, community-based cognitive behavioral therapy, women’s specialty, and drug testing services. The term of the agreement is from October 1, 2020, through September 30, 2021 (DWIHN 2020).

Organization’s policies and procedures are implemented to help make employees understand the organization’s views and values on specific issues, and what will occur if they are not followed. Policies are general statements of how an organization want to behave and procedures define exactly how to do a task or perform step by step. My field agency works with veterans and the elderly population, therefore, there is access to a numerous amount of confidential information pertaining to the client’s background (i.e. family history, background and open dependency case statuses). There are numerous trainings regarding HIPPA and ethics that must be followed at all times. Other trainings are specifically designed and utilized to company policy. In the mental health field, there are times when situations or emotions arise within the clients we are working with which can result in physical aggression or attempt. In these scenarios, the is a policy that exists not only to protect the client but the employees as well. Each situation has a protocol to include steps to be followed. Following a course of action along with applying de-escalation tools learn in training to help protect all parties that are involved. Policy states that we cannot use physical force or touch when working with the identified client population. There are tools given that can help assist with protecting yourself while not injuring the other party involved, this is the policy to follow by.

The values of the company align with the code of ethics, regarding respect and dignity and compassion and understanding. The mission not only ensures that the clients are treated with respect, but every person on site and outside providers will be treated the same way across the board. We are considered to be representatives of the company and the most positive attention must be viewed. The purpose of policies such as these is, they allow you to communicate to your employees the way you expect them to behave on the job. Violation of policies exist as well and these can be as minor as a written or verbal reprimand, to suspension of an employee, all the way to termination based on the severity of the violation. The policies are explained and the employee is to sign them stating that they understand at the time of new hire or orientation. As an intern, I am still a representative of the organization and was required to sign the same paperwork as employees. Organizational policies are necessary to ensure that the company is providing the most efficient and effective service while remaining ethical as to what is labeled in the values, vision and mission of the agency.

An organizational policy in my field education experience at Building Beyond Therapy LLC. is their Social Media Policy. This policy requires that employees and interns abide by the guidelines as it relates to social media posting, blogging, and sharing of information. These guidelines are in place even if the student and/or employee decides to post information on their own site or other sites. Both employees and interns must sign the Building Beyond Therapy LLC., Social Media Policy before starting their position.

The following guidelines are in place to protect Building Beyond Therapy LLC, the employee/student, and clients:

  1. Follow all applicable Building Beyond Therapy LLC policies. For example, you must not share confidential or proprietary information about Building Beyond Therapy LLC and you must maintain patient privacy. Among the policies most pertinent to this discussion are those concerning patient confidentiality, email use, and the use of recorded patient information.
  2. Write in the first person. Where your connection to Building Beyond Therapy LLC is apparent, make it clear that you are speaking for yourself and not on behalf of Building Beyond Therapy LLC.   9. Unless approved by the management, your social media name, handle and URL should not include Building Beyond Therapy LLC’s name or logo.

Having this Social Media policy in place is critical to the development of the agency, the confidentiality of the client, and the overall professionalism of the clinician. Most times, social media is an outlet for us to talk about our day. However, having this policy in place limits the staff with oversharing and directs the staff to take accountability for their own actions without causing liability issues for Building Beyond Therapy LLC. This policy also protects the livelihood of our clients, guarantees confidentiality, and ensures that we respect their dignity and worth of a person.
