Unconditional positive regard involves showing complete support and acceptance of a person no
matter what that person says or does. The therapist accepts and supports the client, no matter
what they say or do, placing no conditions on this acceptance. That means the therapist supports
the client, whether they are expressing “good” behaviors and emotions or “bad” ones.1
Congruence: Congruence is the most important attribute, according to Rogers. This implies
that the therapist is real and/or genuine, open, integrated and authentic during their interactions
with the client.
Empathy See their world through their eyes. Empathy is our effort to experience someone else’s
reality, no matter how different from ours, as if it were our own. At one level, this is obviously
impossible, but the willingness to try, to be on the same wavelength, to set aside one’s own
response to have some feeling of that of another, seems to be a vital part of helping.
Respect or Non-possessive Warmth- Respect for another does not mean that we may not abhor
their actions, but that we try to see their human value as separate from that, and deal with them
with warmth and acceptance.
Authenticity and Genuineness – Calls for therapists to be themselves, and to interact authentically
and sincerely with their clients
