Research Process Issues Questions

After reading “Research Process Issues” from page chapter 4 and looking in peer review articles, discuss the following questions:

  • What are the issues usually happen in research process?
  • What could cause those issues?
  • What could those issues cause?
  • Do you have any experiences with them?

1. A research process is typically put into place when a management dilemma that requires a decision occurs (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). The issues that arise that require this process to make decisions can occur anywhere in the company and along to production and sales process. Unfortunately, although the decision-maker is using the research process to solve a dilemma, the actual process can also have its own issues. A few of the issues that can arise include the research process not being as effective as it should or could be as well as studies going off the target (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). Some of the reasons that the research process goes awry is due to a few factors. One of the negative factors may include that the researcher has a preferred research technique that is not what would be best for the actual dilemma. The second issue that may cause an issue with the research process is the existence of a company database for strip mining. With this option, the decision-manager may feel they have all they need with the information they already have and therefore miss crucial information by going further with additional research (Giraud & Saulpic, 2019). A third factor that may cause research issues is unresearchable questions. If questions cannot be researched or answered they are not helpful and may end up spending unnecessary resources on unhelpful information. A fourth issue that could cause problems are ill-defined management problems. If the problems are too broad or too vague it can be difficult to properly research and narrow down what is important and can be left out (Swain & Spire, 2020). The fifth issue mentioned by Cooper and Schindler (2014) is politically motivated research. When researchers have this type of motivation they will hold a bias towards a particular way and will only look for and receive information that will confirm their biases.

All of these issues can cause a lack of diverse information being gathered during the research process. When the decision-maker does not have all information that could or needs to be gathered, their decision will not be as thorough as it could be. When this happens the decision-maker is making a less than ideal decision whether they realize it or not. It can also cause more issues down the road or result in the answer not working and the decision-maker having to start the process over again (Giraud & Saulpic, 2019).

I have definitely had experience with missteps in the research process in the business setting. The main ways I have experienced issues in the research process are with politically motivated research and the favored-technique syndrome that ultimately leads to the answer the decision-maker wants instead of what is for the best.

Several pitfalls can negatively impact the research process. There may be issues that affect the integrity of the work. These include finding the right topic and study participants, choosing the correct methodology, unexpected delays, data analysis, and remaining on topic. Once the research process begins, the issues that can include the research process not being as effective as it should or could be and studies going off the target (Cooper and Schindler, 2014).

It is critical to understand that effective research should be applied to areas of interest and conduct a study that will contribute to some field or research in a memorable way (Huecker and Shreffler, 2021). It is important to remember that we are human, and humans can be biased. Bias can be considered a hindrance to the data collection, analysis, the publication of results (Huecker and Shreffler, 2021). It is difficult to eliminate bias, but methods can be put into practice to help eliminate them as much as possible. They are making a concerted effort to attempt to reduce the instance of it occurring.

In the past, I have had some experience with mistakes during the research process. Whether it be a possible change to a shift or schedule or even products/services offered, I realize where we may have gone wrong.
