The three most important skills for effective team management by a public health leader

The three most important skills necessary for effective team management by a public health leader are teamwork, accountability, and flexibility. Teamwork requires the leader to learn how to work with others in a cohesive environment. Also, they need to know how to take feedback and give constructive feedback, along with being open-minded to others’ opinions (Rosen et al., 2018). Taking accountability means the leader must not pass on their job or responsibilities onto someone else and abuse their power. Also, the leader must take accountability for any challenges that arise, must be punctual to prevent procrastination, and must be present in both body and mind. This means, they cannot just show up to a meeting or event and have their mind wondering, they need to be present holistically (Bassett, 2018). Lastly, flexibility, a leader needs to be able to quickly think out of the box and solve any challenges or issues that may arise, and be adaptable (Koh, 2015).

Discuss why you selected these as priorities and provide examples of how these skills can contribute to effective team management and supervision.

I selected these skills because together they increase the effectiveness of the leaders’ ability to accomplish their role as a leader and any task that is administered for and by them. For example, there is a community that is experiencing an increased rate of obesity in adolescents. Therefore, the leader needs to part take in teamwork to work together to come up with ideas and solutions to these public health issues. After deliberating through teamwork, the leader needs to hold accountability and be flexible for any issues that may arise on the day of the event to make sure the event is successful. This will increase the trust from the communities for the public health officials and leaders and create more opportunities to work together in a collaborative partnership. Lastly, if a team or staff can see that their leader takes accountability for his actions and exhibit flexibility and adaptability, it will increase trust in the organization and promote empowerment and engagement within the organization for future activities/task, therefore, contributing to effective team management and supervision.
