George Mason University Agricultural Sector & Data Collection in Power Grids Papers

Sector-specific plans all have a common structure. This structure supports consistency while allowing flexibility for each sector to include their specific requirements. .

For this activity, review chapter 10 in your textbook.

Module Notes One: Food and Agriculture

Module Notes Two: Water and Wastewater

Module Notes Three: Energy

Chapter 10, “Sector-Specific Agencies Approaches to Risk: Food and Agriculture, Water and Wastewater, Energy,” in the textbook Critical Infrastructure Protection, Risk Management, and Resilience: A Policy Perspective (Pesch-Cronin and Marion, 2017).

Respond to the following

1. Select one of the sectors covered in this module and assume the role of a big city mayor.

2. Next, describe in detail the significance of this sector to your city and the various risks the sector presents.

3. In your post explain the methods the city might take to manage risk and the variety of hazards the sector presents for your city.

4. In your post include a discussion of the sector missions, hazards, and methods for managing risk.

Part 2 : Power Grid Challenges

As this module illustrates, the electric power grid is one of the fundamental infrastructures of the United States. As a Level 1 critical infrastructure, protection of the grid is a major priority. Challenges facing the power grid include obtaining approval for corridors of land for new transmission lines within states or that cross multiple states, and the financing and constructing of new transmission lines to assure continued reliability of our electricity supply. Recent studies illustrate the continuing challenge of vulnerabilities in power grids.

In preparation for this activity, read and reflect upon the following articles:

Respond to the following:

  • Summarize the findings of Coppolino, et al. (2014) and discuss the two technologies that allow for data collection in power grids [Phasor Measurement Unit (PMUs) and Phasor Data Concentrators (PDCs)]. What weaknesses were exposed? Do you concur with the findings of the authors?
  • Discuss your thoughts on the issue of electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) and securing the grid as presented by Jacobus, et. al. (2016). Next, select one of their recommendations and critique its merits for achieving resiliency.
