Cuyamaca Community College Handling COVID 19 Discussion & Reply

Objective: To understand the importance of global health governance in disease transmission and reflect on how COVID-19 was handled.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In 2-3 sentences, describe global health governance and why it is important in disease transmission.
  2. Describe 2 missteps of WHO in handling Ebola and please cite your sources.
  3. Now, think about how COVID-19 is being handled.  Has WHO learned it’s lesson from Ebola in handling COVID-19? Why or why not? (Links to an external site.)
  4. Based on what you have learned about global health governance and COVID-19, does the US response to COVID-19 (Links to an external site.) align with the principles of global health governance? If you were a key player in global health, such as the President or the Secretary of State, discuss two things that you would have either done differently or kept the same in handling COVID-19, and your justification for either making these changes or supporting what has been done. Hint: think about how the US is now handling vaccine distribution worldwide in relation to global health governance.

    1. The principles of global health governance are essentially all of us not just me, there is a heavy focus on cooperation because historically it has worked. It focuses on abundant funding, smooth negotiation and fantastic epidemiology. The United States has and continues to have a terrible response to the most recent pandemic. If I were a person in power I would evaluate the surveillance and monitoring aspect. There would be much more surveys done on a small scale, organized to look at how many cases we have in small communities, to the cities, to the regions, to the state. When vaccines arrived, I would have enough information to provide enough resources to the places in the state that need them. I would cooperate with states that are close by to control areas of the country.
    2. Issues like the public recommendations/communication and the availability of resources in hospitals and health pop-ups should have been solved much earlier on in the process of eliminating the disease. If I were a woman in power I would have had much more communication with the American people. This would be information purely science based, as well as updates on how the effort is going. I would like to emphasize that there is no reason to not have enough resources such as hospital beds. In an emergency, leaders need to mobilize to make things happen. As a leader I would create systems that ensure that hospitals always have enough resources
